Lighting is critical. I use four desk lamps each having a 5000 K colour temperature compact fluorescent bulb. It compares very well with the Trumpeter ASLAV-25 kit of which I have included a few photo... RonV For the most part, they weren't painted. The were made of a treated steel (zinc comes to mind) to prevent corrosion and were mottled dull light to medium gray in color. The bands were iron and had a dark brown metallic color. The contents were embossed into the top of the drum.
