Rolling Ball Timer
Da Vinci Rolling Ball Timer
  • move

by: George Redell [ GEORGE4 ]

The Rolling Ball Timer by Academy is the newest addition to the Da Vinci line of kits. The Ball Timer is based on a sketch of an escapement mechanism drawn by Leonardo Da Vinci. The kit uses the principles of gravity and kinetics to measure the passage of time. It employs precision gears to power a platform in a “see saw” pattern that propels a rolling ball. When complete, it exhibits concepts relating to the laws of motion and delivers hours of entertainment.

The kit comes in a newly redesigned box cover. Inside the box are 4 protective bags containing the gears, metal shafts, 2 plastics part sprues, a metal ball, and some larger loose plastic parts. There are a total of 43 parts in this kit. The plastic parts are molded in the typical black and a realistic wood color similar to the other Da Vinci kits. The instructions is a color fold out pamphlet type with 12 easy to follow steps. All the parts are well molded with no visible flash or flaws. This kit requires no paint or glue, and the only tool would be a sprue cutter.

I have put together a few of these kits before and this one, just like the others went together very well. I had no problems at all with assembly. The kit took me about 20 minutes to complete. Everything snapped together very easily. I really liked how the instructions had an actual size shaft in the step that the shaft was used. This made it very easy to determine what shaft was needed in that step.

To operate the Ball Timer you must add a few coins (or some type of weight) to the basket lever. Position the ball in the ball rolling channel and release the locking device. The timer will start. The timer last about 30 seconds.

Another great kit in Academy’s Da Vinci series. This was a quick fun build and is perfect kit for the younger modeler.
