G.E. Diesel Cab Kit High Hood Version 2 Window Item: HTD-5006
Model railroading is fun and for many of us part of that fun modeling a particular prototype, even during a specific time. Railroads and equipment manufacturers have given us a bewildering number of modifications to model. These are often unique and not economical for model makers to mass produce. Riding to the rescue are model makers like Hi-Tech Details!
Hi-Tech Details of Ukiah, California, have been around for a while supplying the HO market with innovative details sets. They market highly detailed accessories for correcting, scratchbuilding, and modifying model railroad locomotives and cars. In addition, Hi-Tech Details (HTD) also produces model kits of complete cars, and line side items.
Hi-Tech Details also makes models and accessories for N and O scale.
Hi-Tech Details website is hi-tech, too! Many of their sets and kits feature click-to-access how-to features and instructions.
G.E. ‘Thin Wall’ Cab Kit 5006
HTD currently lists 14 cab kits on their site. This set arrives packed in a plastic bag stapled to HTD’s vivid fuchsia and black card label. This set allows you to model any G.E. U-boat from the U-25 through the Dash 7. Five sprues hosting fourteen smooth light gray styrene parts build the cab; an extra sixth sprue of the front and back cab walls with doors, is included. All are crisply molded without flash, ejector marks, seam lines or sink marks.
No clear panels are included for the windows. Perhaps HTD intends you to use thin clear sheet or aftermarket liquid window film?
Detail is both recessed and raised as appropriate. Each window and the cab doors are separate so you can model them open or closed, and the door lock/handles are separate. I do not know what they are for but HTD molded holes under the window s of the front and back cab walls – very nice! G.E. fans can look at the photographs and debate the accuracy of the parts.
Instructions are stapled into the package. However, the sheet accompanying this set is for Hi-Tech Details set 5011 ’B' Unit Conversion Kit for Proto 2000 GP9 Diesel UP/PRR .
Modelers who want a particular U-boat can now convert their model with cab. The parts feature excellent molding and detail. Separate windows and doors afford you choices for positioning the parts. The extra sprue is nice. However, there are no clear pieces for the windows, and the instruction mix-up can be problematic. Overall I can recommend this set.
Please remember, when contacting retailers or manufacturers, to mention that you saw their products highlighted here – on RailRoadModeling.net.
