Project Base & Backdrop
Version: Large
Item: SP4165

Introduction

Woodland Scenics sells this base kit as part of their Scene-A-Rama line of diorama products. It can be used for any number of modeling and craft uses.

The perfect foundation for your diorama or display. The Backdrop fits snugly into the grooves on the molded, black base and provides a durable backdrop. Cut to any shape and paint, decorate, label, etc.*

Woodland Scenics is a pioneer of realistic model scenery. I was buying their soft metal tree trunks and ground-foam for my railroad and dioramas over thirty years ago. Woodland Scenics expanded their product lines to include cast metal buildings and vehicles, man-made scenery (a.k.a., junk piles), hundreds of plastic figures, glues, water simulating resins, plastic vehicles, plastic trees, static grass and natural fiber grass, rock molds, talus, earth color paints, a foam layout system, and now this series of crafty and hobby sets.

Project Base & Backdrop

Packaging is simply the the plastic wrapped Backdrop glued to the Project Base. The instructions are printed on the back of the product label. Included are several small blank paper labels to title your display. They are cut to fit on a herald molded onto the front of the base.

Size:

    Base Project Area: 10 3/4" w x 7 3/8" d x 7 1/2" h
    Overall Size: 12 1/2" w x 9 1/4" d x 9 5/8" h **

The backdrop is a piece of white foamcore. It fits snugly into a groove that runs the full perimeter of the base. Double-sided tape is included so that you can permanently attach the backdrop.

What can you do with this? Seven illustrated examples are:

    1. Display -- vertical and horizontal surfaces
    2. Horizon -- a diorama with a backdrop
    3. Backdrop -- showing two scenes of a jungle
    4. Profile -- cut-out of a volcano
    5. Enclosure -- the solar system
    6. Shadowbox
    7. Canvas -- for painting or for posters, murals, mosaics, whatever your mind can imagine.

The directions guide you through cutting the backdrop to make contours, strips for compartments in a shadowbox, an easel, and walls.

Woodland Scenics coaches that if your project is too heavy for the base, it can easily be reinforced with cardboard or foamcore. They also show many ideas for this kit.

Demonstration
I used this base for the Scene-A-Rama Desert Oasis Diorama Kit (Please see RELATED LINK: in the SUMMARY box below). Included in this review's photos is applying adhesive to the base and to the diorama groundcover, pressing it with telephone books, and the finished project. The interior of the base was a perfect fit for my local telephone books.

Finally
This is a neat and inexpensive base set. Whether you need it for models or for your kids' school and craft displays, this set is useful. It is sized to easily accept models of 1/24 and smaller. For aircraft modelers it easily held a 1/72 multi-engine plane. Lots of vehicles can be displayed upon this base. That it is vacuformed means it could be somewhat flimsy depending on how much weight you will place on it. Easy enough to reinforce.

I easily recommend this item.
