MAN TGX XXL Euro 6 Rigid Tractor with Accessories

This is Herpa's new fully-trimmed MAN TGX XXL rigid tractor featuring the fender and the appropriate lamp bar. It is released in cobalt blue. It is one of 159 MAN TGX XXL models available from Herpa.

MAN TGX XXL
The MAN TGX XXL is a heavy duty tractor equipped for long distance driving.
    When the new MAN TGX Euro 6 was premiered worldwide at the IAA in Hannover, it was also a very special moment in the small Central Franconian village of Dietenhofen. Because parallel with the “big truck”, its respective “little brother” was produced there in the 1/87 scale based on the original plans and in cooperation with the designers and developers of MAN and – of course - in utmost secrecy.
Herpa released these high-quality models of the new MAN TGX XXL Euro 6 in autumn 2012; at the time of this review Herpa offers 914 models of MAN vehicles and 159 TGX XXL types.

Rolled out to the public at the 2007 European Transport Road Show the MAN TGX is the flagship of MAN Nutzfahrzeuge Trucknology® Generation series. Declared the most powerful truck in Europe, the TGX is designed to carry the heaviest loads over the most challenging terrain for long distances.

MAN TGX series is a family of rigid and articulated trucks. The vehicles were powered by 4 or 6-cylinder MAN engines of the D20 or D26 series generating from 264 KW (360 HP) up to 397 KW (540 HP), connected to an advanced MAN transmission. MAN constructs the frame in a ladder design supported by 4X2 and 6X4 axle configurations. This Herpa model is of the TGX 18.480 with a D2676 Common Rail 353 kW/480 hp engine. Transmission is the MAN TipMatic® with ZF Intarder.‡

For driver comfort MAN offers the option of the XLX or XXL cab. The XXL cab is designed for long haul with high-class standards.

The model
This impressive model comes in Herpa's signature red box with a cellophane display window. The model is securely packed in a form-fitted vacuformed tray. Although the box card is not heavy, the box and tray did a good job of protecting the model. The mailing carton was crushed enroute. Though the box was partially crushed, the model was unharmed.

With one exception I did not find any flaws in the molding nor assembly. The exterior features fine recessed lines for doors and hoods and panels. The chassis is very detailed with the frame, battery box, fuel tanks, transmission, drive shaft, differential, axles, and suspension. The front axle can be made steerable with a Herpa steering kit. Topside is a fifth-wheel and the detailed cab. Each of the six wheels has rubber tires and plastic hubcaps.

The one problem I found is the windshield. It has some small blemishes that look like little bubbles in it. Otherwise the windows are free of distortion and you can see the nice interior.

You can attach the four optional separate external mirrors.

Details
This model has extra accessories: the big driving lamp frame atop the cab and a crash-frame bumper. Both of these are chromed.

Individual clear lenses simulate the headlights and tinted clear lenses detail the tail lights. The windshield wipers are part of the separate black chrome combing around the windshield. Herpa engineered the soft plastic tires to slip over the detailed rims and they display good tread detail.
The model has slots in the front of the cab doors where the optional separate side view mirrors are inserted. Although the mirrors are delicate, it is a simple process if you are careful. Each mirror face lacks a reflecting surface although reflective chrome is on the mirrors of Private Collection models I have examined.

Inside of the cab is detail almost worth popping the cab off for, with bucket seats, a steering wheel, console, stick shift, and dashboard detailing. The cab freely tilts forward to expose a single-piece D2676 Common Rail engine with basic detail.

Livery and Finish
The model features a high quality finish in kobaltblau / cobalt blue, silver, and black. The MAN grille emblem is chrome. Other MAN emblems, logos, and markings are sharply printed, not decals. Herpa does not use decals.

Conclusion
This MAN TGX is a beautifully finished and detailed model. It features good plastic detail. It has a detailed underbody, lenses for lights, a detailed interior which is visible through clear windows, and a tilting cab to reveal the D2676 engine. Paint and chrome is flawless. Printing is sharp.

The only negative is the windshield with some blemishes.

I think this is an impressive HO model of a modern heavy semi-tractor. This model will be very popular on modern railroad layouts and for modern dioramaists. Highly recommended.
