Audi A3 Cabriolet
Audi's new A3® convertible recently debuted in Frankfort and Herpa quickly released a new model of it. Compact-luxury cars are a burgeoning market and Audi's A3 cabriolet has thrown its hat - or convertible top - in the ring. It includes advanced technologies including the Audi magnetic ride adjustable suspension. Many engines are available including gasoline, diesel, and cylinder-on-demand for their TFSI (Direct injection and turbocharging combined) and 2.0 litre TDI engine.

dealer showroom
Herpa currently catalogs 181 Audi models of all types including 22 A3 models, and 97 convertibles. The model is fully assembled and packed in a light plastic form-fitted tray secured in a light plastic box.

I found no flaws in the molding or assembly. The exterior features fine recessed lines for doors and hoods and panels. Fine detail extenuates the lower grille. The jaunty windshield is free of distortion. Except for concave dual exhaust ports the underside has only basic molded detailed, and the tires have no tread detail.

Kicking the tires
Individual clear lenses simulate the headlights and tinted lenses simulate the tail lights.

Separate side view mirrors are attached. Soft plastic tires encompass sharply detailed sunburst hubcaps. As Audi makes the convertible top to retract into the body, there is no top detail to mar the smooth contour of the body top.

The interior features bucket seats, the steering wheel, console, rear-view mirror with a reflective surface (usually only found on Herpa special edition models), stick shift and dashboard detailing. The side mirrors lack reflective surfaces.

Unlike most of the Herpa vehicles I have reviewed in the past the only detail on the plastic-rubber composite tires are tread detail on the edges. Otherwise tread detail is ignored.

Paint and Finish
This model is beautifully finished with a lustrous scubablau perleffekt / scuba-blue with pearl effect exterior. It will also be available in ibisweiß / ibis white. Chrome trim encompasses the black chrome of the grille, windshield, and passenger compartment. A chrome Audi emblem emblazons the grille and another is stamp-painted on the back along with "A3". These emblems and markings are sharply printed and not decals. Herpa does not use decals. The paint is thin, glass-smooth, and opaque.

Sold!
Herpa has released another excellent model of a beautiful compact-luxury car. This Audi A3 is an impressive model with fine plastic detail and excellent finishing. It features lenses for headlights and brake lights, a detailed interior, and applied side view mirrors. Printing is sharp. I happily recommended this model for collectors, model railroaders, and diorama makers.
