In the 1880s Southern Pacific Railroad built from California across the southwest towards Texas. In the 1990s SP was merged into Union Pacific, which keeps the fires burning with an active steam program. One of the steam locomotives is the awesome UP 844, a FEF (Four-Eight-Four) 4-8-4 Northern type engine. No. 844 visited Deming, NM and RRM member John Staehle [Johncpo] took these photos of the magnificent engine.

John tells us, "Deming is a great place as it offers tons of railroad history, and as you might know was home to a very historic freight depot that I have photos of being moved on the day Discovery Channel was filming the move as well. The historic value of the depot went down to zero the minute it was de-valued by UP rr which now owns the track ROW (Right Of Way).

The BNSF tracks still remain and come down from Rincon through Hatch and into Deming on their side of what used to be a freight transfer station. Rebuilt after a fire burned down the original two story depot and the freight master's home, it was re-built as a one-story depot but did not survive being cut in halves to be moved in August 2004.

The history of the area also includes the ROW of the old and now torn up El Paso and Pacific RR that went through Columbus, Hatchita and on into Arizona. A metal water tank as well as some of the structures still remains in Hatchita as well as loading chutes for cattle."
