I've seen lots of Post-Apocalyptic STALKER figures sporting the standard AK-47 rifle as per the figure's character. I'm wondering how good is this 7.62mm rifle?

I've read that it's (wildly) inaccurate at distant ranges, but can take abuse, dirt, and rough handling.

My question is...should one replace the AK-47 with a better weapon such as the AK-74, M-16A4, or FN-FAL even if the hitting power is less?

Thanks in advance.

FN-FAL, HK G3 and M14 (all firing the 7.62x51 NATO) actually have equal/better hitting power than an AK47 (firing a 7.62x38).

MY choice would either be a G3 (less parts and you have a stone) or a Mauser 98K. Either way a full auto rifle is not needed but (at least in Europe) stuff like wild pigs call for 7.62x57 or above AND provide a lot of calories for the bullet.

I think that in a post-apocalyptic setting, things like accuracy and so forth are luxuries and the main focus would be availability

the ak47 akm and the zillion variants were made in vast quantities far greater than m16, fal, etc. Ditto ammo availability would also be better. THe ak is the ideal weapon, it's simple to clean, use, indestructible and dead reliable. and it's ubiquitous, no matter part of the world you might be, ak is there.

One reason you see a lot of AK's is that they are a hardy, low maintenance, reliable rilfe. The soviets and chinese and their client nations were more worried about political indoctrination than teaching weapon cleaning and maintenance. And I found with the AK's I've owned the cheaper ones weren't accurate beyond about 100 meters except for the one I paid several hundred dollars for was good for 250. Every AR based rifle I've owned or was issued and M1's I've purchase was accurate beyond 300 meters, the 7.62 NATO way beyond that. But these were rifles that needed to be cleaned and cared for. The 7.62 NATO round is more destructive than the AK round but in a post apocalypse scenario probably harder to find. The AK-74 is really a refined AK-47 chambered for a 5.54 round which would be harder to find than a AK-47 round. And about the only way you could tell a AK-74 from a AK-47 is the color of the magazines. The AK-74 has a plastic orange mag so it couldn't be confused with a mag for a AK-47.

AKMs (7.62x39) have an orange bakelite magazine. AK-74s also have black and plum coloured bakelite magazines.

Difference between a classic and modern AK is vast if you know what to look for

Also the AK-47 has been produced in such variety and profrusion, by so many nations that after the big bang (or Skynet takes over) what do you think will be the easiest to find and most available?

Aside for one magazine in 1981, I've not fired an M16, and never fired an AK. But a friend that was a USMC adviser in S. America told me that day-to-day he preferred his M16, but if he was surrounded and had to grab a weapon off the ground and just hold down the trigger that he would grab an AK.

Living in a free state I have the opportunity to own an AK47 type rifle. As a SHTF defenseive weapon it really excells due to several factors. It is leathel at the 75 to 150 yards engaugement range; most gun fights take place at close range. The 7.62x39 round is relativily inexpensive. Lucky Gunner has a bulk pack of 1000 rounds listed for $209 currently, thats 20.9 cents a round. https://www.luckygunner.com/rifle/7.62x39mm-ammo
We buy our ammunition prior to SHTF events. Let me say you won't be able to but it later! There is a bunch of 7.62x39 ammunition available. Chances are it would be the type of ammuniton you might "aquire" in certain ways post SHTF.

The Ak platform is rugged, especially with a chrome lined barrel. It can take mud, rain, dirt, snow, and any crap you could put it through. Fact is, it runs and runs and runs. It is my SHTF (civil unrest) go to battle rifle. Oh yes, it has a bayonet lug. Nothing more intimidating, than a sharp pointy thing at the end of a rifle!

More improtantly there are three other weapons that I have for SHTF self defense and food gathering. First, I have a 22 cal rifle for small game gathering using relatively quiet sub sonic ammunition. Second, there is my pistol (a Glock 40cal) for up close self defense. Finally a good ol 12 gauge pump shotgun like my Mossburg works well with slugs for people or game and birdshot for dove and quale.

Come to think of it, maybe the best go to SHTF weapon is the shotgun with interchangeable 18" and 24" barrels!
