E-2 Bi-polar Electric Locomotive

Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific needed powerful locomotives to haul their heavy trains over the Cascade Mountains. E-2 is the sole surviving "Gearless Bi-polar."

"Bi-polars" were powered by electricity, much of which was generated from hydo-electric plants built for the railroad.

This beautiful Bi-polar is on display at the Museum of Transportation, St. Louis, MO. I photographed her the day before the museum's 2002 farewell excursion of Frisco 1522.
